Drumming!
September 27th, 2006
I started playing the drums! Like, a kick, snare and hi-hat all at once! Wow, I never thought in a million years that I would be playing drum lines of my favorite, most revered rock bands from my teens on up through the 80s. It is an awesome challenge.
Playing drums is something I have always wanted to do ever since I was a kid, but never thought I was coordinated, steady or speedy enough to ever do it. In grade school, the catholic school I attended started a music program when I was in 8th grade. I chose flute because it was cheaper for my parents to rent, and easier to carry to school than a drum. But my first true heart’s pick was drum.
Djing was a way to play drums vicariously, in a way, because I can play very percussion/drum-heavy music. But nothing beats the challenge of actually playing a kit!
I am some kind of freak, too, apparently…my instructor says I am picking it up at an alarmingly high rate. This new skill will further benefit me with my music production down the road.
Drumming is a very rewarding aspect of my musical soul, and helps compensate for the depression I have over not getting a decent booking as a DJ lately, even though I am a really good DJ. I have learned, L.A. is not about how good you are, it’s about politics.
